Just Dullness

Sunday was trying. I have no idea why. I could not get any words or sounds out. Did I worry or care? Not at all. This shall pass.

This morning, I’m speaking well, as I seem to be able to do most mornings. But as the day ages, my speech fades. I’m not sure why, but as I say, I don’t care and I believe that come better weather and as the holidays fade further into the past, I expect to be more fluent even in the afternoons.

Today, and likely every day this week, will be spent dog walking and reading.

Apparently we get mail delivery today, so the books I ordered in early December may arrive this week. I’m doing really well with being settled and sticking to reading. Shantaram was so, so easy to stick with because I spent a lot of time in Mumbai and was familiar with a great many of the settings—particularly Leopold’s in Colaba where I spent hours and hours with friends.

Now I’m reading Behind the Scenes at the Museum. It, too, is easy to stay with. It’s quirky, quite humorous and rich with character.

DNA Incoming

On Saturday, Sheba and I went for a nice long morning forest walk because it felt so mild, and then we went to the south end of the island to do some errands for my friend, Patsy, after which we had a lovely visit.

Once back home, Sheba and I frittered the rest of our unremarkable day away. Our afternoon walk was pleasant because we ran into Anna and Minjou and both Sheba and I adore little Minjou and we hadn’t been together for quite a while.

In the evening, I finished watching Bridgerton. I didn’t find the series brilliant, but the sets—oh my God, I loved the sets and costumes.

Today will be the same: Walk, read, eat; repeat and to bed. Every day is just almost the same and virtually every day, the weather is dull—not always wet, and not cold, but uninspiring. But, I’m mailing in the Ancestry DNA kit that my friend Leslie gave me today. I’m super excited to hear what it reveals in that I know absolutely nothing about my father. My irritating (but fascinating) mother, wouldn’t ever tell me who he was and died with the secret.

Warm Weather for Forest Walking

Christmas passed. It’s over for another year. Thank God.

Di, Regina, Donna, Erik and I walked our dogs in the morning in light rain, and then I came home to finish watching Vanity Fair on CBC Gem and then the first several episodes of Bridgerton on Netflix. Both are set in the same period and awesome period pieces. The sets and costumes in both were absolutely delicious and, of course, the acting is excellent. Both shows exemplify my favourite form of entertainment.

Donna and Paula both gave me presents of home baking. I had to face my addiction: I devoured it all, but hey, it was Christmas and I’m not fat anymore. Now I have slight Boxing Day regret.

This morning, I arose late—at five-thirty—fed the cats and went outside to fetch wood with which to build a fire, and surprise: It was warm and windy. I hope we don’t get a power failure due to the strong wind. But we’re clearly enjoying a Pineapple Express wind from the south-west blowing warm moist air from Hawaii. Sheba and I will enjoy a long walk as soon as the sun comes up.

I don’t dislike the holiday but, as I say, I’m really glad it’s over. A lingering element of disappointment about the disfunction of our family is recalled but not mourned each Christmas.

Soon the New Year celebration will be past, too, and we’ll be in 2021 and on our way to Spring. I’m still waiting for more books to arrive that were ordered weeks and weeks ago. They are my plan for getting through the rest of Winter. Every cell in my body awaits the buds, sunshine and warmer temperatures of Spring and all the hope and joy they bring.

Merry Merry

Christmas. Hmmmm. It’s dark and raining at six am. Regardless, my little dog walking group is forest (swamp) walking this morning. It’s a first for them. I’m taking them little bags of meringue mushrooms that I made yesterday.

So far, the best news is that Bridgerton debuts on Netflix today and it has eight episodes. I plan to spend a good deal of time today gloriously horizontal watching it with Sheba.
