I’m troubled about the wood harvesting that I have done. I know I harvested some wood that I shouldn’t have, but it was an accident. I took a photo of the tree that I wanted bucked and split and showed it to Grayson when I asked if he could do the work. And I showed him the tree when he came, but he harvested more than I asked him to, and I was fine by what he’d done. It was all wood felled by the storm. But I may get bitten by the Nanaimo Regional District.
Sheba and I met our friends for the morning walk yesterday, under slightly cloudy skies and 8° air. We enjoyed a very refreshing walk, and then Her Highness and I came home to rest and then have lunch, and Grayson arrived. He’s such a mensch! And while he worked on stacking wood, I cleaned the hot tub (YAY!) and ordered water that will come this morning just past 9:00 o’clock. And that means I’ll be in the tub tonight!
Walking with my friends, exhausts me. I always need a lie down when I get home because we walk for an hour. Yesterday, my nap was very short because Grayson arrived, so when I was done cleaning the hot tub, I was a walking zombie. Still, it was time for Sheba’s game of fetch, so off we went. All the way there, I thought about how great it was going to be tonight to get back to having daily spas. I solove a good soak.
Grayson figures that his work has yielded between five and six cords of wood, not including the mountains of branch and bark pieces. I’m so set for the next couple of years! As I go broke, he’s moving onto clearing some of the crap that I’ve piled up in the back of the yard from the deck renovations. It’s a fire hazard, so his idea is a good one.
And I undertook my last action with regards to my breathing. I wrote to my asthma doctor to ask about different medications and my prognosis. I want to know what I can expect going forward—that is, will this deterioration continue? Last chapter of the story.

I still can’t get over The Life of Pi play, and Pi’s explanation of God. I took Religious Studies courses, I went to synagogues, churches, temples and mosques, and I went to Auroville, in India, where I found the best religious practice that integrated well with science and sociology. I wanted to experience a spiritual community that suited me. Auroville was the closest I could find, and it was awfully far away.
But Pi’s explanation of the function of his story being similar in purpose to God and faith, gave me a very satisfactory explanation of how religion serves its people. And then I understand why politicians are afraid to tamper with Christians. They don’t want to shit on cults that give the populace solace.
My formative years were spent with non-fiction, documentaries and lots and lots of reading. Animals and plants are my favourite things. Science. I also love baking. Science. I also loved studying nature. One of my best holidays with Steve was following a short portion of a fault line, from BC to Oregon. Science.
Science serves as my church, and Pi’s explanation of God allows me to know where to put that information in the library of my knowledge. God, I love theatre.

Last night I did my first true evening walkabout in my yard. Pete had mowed the lawn. I paid him in thick slices of wood rounds for his garden. And the gardens all pleased me. I see things that I want done, but 97% of the gardens are looking spectacular. It’s all thrilling me. My blueberries are dripping with tiny little green berry buds, the fruit trees are blossoming, the lilacs and the Camelia have blossoms for the first time!!
I’m proud of all I’ve done. It looks so good now because the yard is green, but it will turn brown when the heat comes, and then the gardens aren’t as lovely. But right now, it’s my own private garden paradise. Birds are already using the fountain for drinking; all the Japanese Maples are about to burst into bloom. I love this time of year.
And then, there’s the wood. Scads of it, all beautifully stacked and sorted into types of wood, bark, and branches. And in one shed, huge rounds of wood drying in the sun.
