DI and Bev Day One

Sunday’s dawn brought clear blue skies. I was thrilled for Dianne and Bev because they would be travelling in ideal weather for the ferry ride. I was glad that I did all the prep work and baking on Saturday because I had a relaxed morning instead of panic baking. I had chores to do, but plenty of time in which to do them.

Every Thanksgiving, the island artists and crafts persons open their studios to the public. That gives Dianne and Beverly something to do to experience an aspect of Gabriola life. The rosettes of lemon curd that topped the cake when I baked it has melted. I’m serving what I’m going to call Yellow Puke Cake because it looks like something yellow is spilled on it. But it’s going to taste as delicious as all previous roll cakes. I know that.

The blue sky was gone by 8:30. Sigh. But the house looked fabulous, all clean and tidy and with a nice warm fire going. And I was completely relaxed. I had a seizure Saturday evening when I was alone. That is unusual, but I like to think that all my stored anxiety was released and so I am fresh for the coming visit.

I tidied up the back deck, and then Her Highness and I went for our morning walk. It was a brisk 8°, and it was raining. We came home to putter and chill as we awaited Dianne and Beverly. I lit some Pine incense that I bought when I moved here. I haven’t used it in years, but I will use it more often henceforth because I love the forest fragrance. It’s perfect for a log cabin.

Unfortunately, Di and Beverly missed the 10:30 ferry from Nanaimo to Gabriola, so they didn’t arrive until just before noon. But that was fine because the first item on our agenda for today was going to The Surf for lunch. I love going out; I never do it alone.

We drove to The Surf in torrential rain, and when we got there the sea was churning because of the storm. Large waves crashed on the rocky beach across the bay. It was beautiful storm watching while we ate in toasty warm comfort. We took our time, we weren’t rushed, and when we got home, I put the tian in the oven and the house filled with the most delicious aroma. I was delighted.

Dianne read and Beverly rested while the tian baked, and then they both got busy making the stuffing for the turkey. We chose not to cook it in the bird. And once it was done, it was time to order pizza for our dinner.

I ate way too much food yesterday. I ate as much as I eat in three days on my diet plan. I loved eating it and hated the regret I felt for the rest of the day. But oh, those yam fries with garlic aioli. Yum! I’m anxious to get back on track, eating less, but I am truly enjoying eating lovely meals with friends.

We watched a mediocre movie on Netflix, and we wall went to bed relatively early. I slept like a dead man last night, and I need lots of sleep when I have guests. I had a seizure during dinner last night. It was inevitable. I hope to not have one today. When I went out for wood to light the fire, the sky was ablaze with billions of bright shining stars, and the moon was brilliant and bright. We may be in for a lovely sunny day.

The ladies want to walk. Sheba will be happy about that. So, we will go to Drumbeg and, perhaps, Elder Cedar to walk. And tonight, a turkey dinner: tian, turkey, stuffing and cake. Woo hoo!
