Friday was a busy day! We declined our invitation to walk with our friends because I had to go to Life Labs for some blood tests. So, we walked early, and then I had the tests done, did some shopping in the village, and came home so that I could start watering the garden beds.
In no time, it was lunch time, so I fed the brood before heading back to the clinic, this time for my Covid booster. Once that was done, I was the walking dead, so I came home for a good long nap, then it was back to watering. It’s now in the high twenties in the afternoons, so the beds are very thirsty.
Finally, in the late afternoon, it was time for our third walk. I was sick of Elder Cedar, so we walked one of our regular shorter routes in the 707 park before coming home to dinner, a movie and early to bed.
Saturday was even hotter than Friday. We went to the market for the first time this year and I got some prepared food from Kenny, a nice guy who makes quite delicious take-out meals. I had his mango salad for lunch and then I. had a wee nap in the speckled sunlight under the Paulownia tree before getting down to work on the weed fields. I weed whacked the edible garden, and I had plans to do much more, but just doing that tuckered me out.
I rested, then went around the house opening windows that are screened. I love having the breeze in the house, and the outside air warms the house. My wonderful log home is self-cooling, so the house stays cool, but I enjoy the forest and garden fragrances the come into the house when all the screened doors and windows are open.
After a good rest, I took to raking up the cones in the front yard and the driveway. Sheba, when I started working, bee lined to the back door, which I found odd. I let her into the house, and she hurried to our bed. I can’t remember ever doing it before; I think, like me, she hates the heat.
At 3:00, it was time to go for a walk. I decided to walk us along a favourite trail that takes us through lovely little meadows, as well us long stretches in the trees where it is cool. I didn’t do a lot of work yesterday, but I didn’t care. It was a rare and precious day to enjoy without watering (which I’ll be back to today). But the walk was too much for such a hot day. We were both overtaxed by it. However, I always have water and a drinking pot in the car and Her Highness was happy to slurp it all up.
The walk was the end of my day outdoors. We got home just before 4:30, and we were both ready for a relaxing evening. I was glad to have Kenny’s chow mein for dinner after our rest. I didn’t have to make anything for myself, so I fed the brood, heated up my dinner, and chose a movie to watch while I rotted on the chaise.
My walkabout last night was extremely rewarding. Everything looks so beautiful if you except that the non-garden bed surface is weeds cut flat. The edible garden is biblically abundant for the first time: blueberries, raspberries, herbs and tomatoes. And the front yard! I had no idea how smart I was being when I planted the Horse Chestnut, Lilac, Fire Maple and the fruit trees. Now, when I look at the front yard, the greens along the border of the house, then the trees, and then the deer-proof garden all feel like one big garden. I feel that now, this house has mighty strong curb appeal.
In the backyard, all the plantings are growing nicely, and your eye is drawn to them, not the weed fields. Also, my backyard has a massive amount of Campion plants. There were some when I moved in; now there are bazillions of them in the yard, not the gardens, and I think they are wonderful. They will soon have shocking crimson flowers that are small but absolutely gorgeous. They stand tall, very tall in fact, and they’re grey. They are beautiful natural self-seeding plants.
Sunday got off to an early start. I was out watering the backyard beds before eight and I got a lot done before walking chunky Her Highness. I’ll finish in the backyard, and I’ll likely water the edible garden and rake it before going to the Firetruck Food Truck at Silva Bay for lunch.
Here are some photos from our afternoon walk yesterday:
| In the back of this field, the Daisies are starting to bloom. Soon this field will be blazing white with them. |
| There are Digitalis plants blooming everywhere! |
