A Great, Great Day

What a day I had yesterday. It was the best day I’ve had in a long time. The highlight was sitting in my car when Tom Allen played a recording of Martin Luther King making his I have a dream speech, and afterwards he played a recording of Mahalia Jackson singing We Shall Overcome. I wept through both recordings.

I mentioned in yesterday’s post that I was writing essays that together might form a book. I also mentioned that I had no interest in publishing, marketing and sales, so the collection of essays may just exist on my computer. However, I love writing. I love the process and have no need for an audience. Yesterday I wrote two more essays. I now have six first drafts finished, two more underway, and a long list of ideas for more. I’m very excited about having a project again.

When I get some more done, I reckon I may begin posting them on my blog. I think they’d be much more interesting than accounts of my dreary life. They’re short and perfect for posts.

And then there’s my work with SPACE. I have a standing meeting every week now with Aidan, and I may be the only board member who meets with him so often. Also, when I got involved, I became interested in creating paid memberships as a first step in fundraising. And now I have the approval of the board to work with Aidan on a report for our next meeting.

I wrote to Aidan offering a list of objectives for our report, and I asked our board chair who’s very savvy on online communication software to prepare a recommendation to be included in our report on what software we should use to build a network of chat rooms to serve the various subgroups within the membership we’re proposing to build. She’s agreed to do the work.

I also went through SPACE’s membership bylaws and drew up a list of recommendations and questions for SPACE’s lawyers and Aidan is going to set up a meeting with him, me and the lawyers to go over my lists. And today, I am drafting a strategy for growing our membership, and all this work will go into a report to the board in March.

That’s not bragging, that’s pride I’m expressing. Pride in the strength of my work, and pride to be feeling worthy of my board position and functional. So SPACE is bringing me joy and purpose, as is doing creative writing to make record of my life.

This morning was rough. I awoke into a migraine, so I fed the brood, lit the fire and went back to bed. It’s another sunny day, another day closer to the snow predicted for Sunday. Pooey! I see Dr. Shoja today and the remainder of the day will involve walks, writing and reading. I’ve SPACE work to do today.
