Sunday began with pain. I must have slept wrong because a muscle in my right lower back was killing me. I took Her Highness for a morning walk and contemplated lying down and dying on the trail. I was miserable on a beautiful My Day morning.
When we got back, I did a quick check of the garden and decided to skip watering. Instead, I passed some time chilling and then I picked all the remaining raspberries to gift to Nancy at our luncheon gathering at Ali and Pete’s to celebrate Nancy’s birthday. Nancy had mentioned not getting any raspberries on her canes this year, so my gift seemed apt. Plus, I enjoyed having taken dessert to Urusla and Dave’s made from my blueberries and then giving the raspberries to Nancy. All. my work is paying off.
Next was a second walk for Sheba and by then the pain in my back was gone. I was back to simple limping but no back strain. I walked her so that I could leave her in the lovely cool house while I went to Ali and Pete’s.
When I got back, it was time to water many thirsty plants. But it was my only chore of the day, and following a lovely animated and delicious brunch, it was a pleasure to feed my babies. The yard is looking spectacular, at least to me. I loved moving about, watering here and there, with no cones on the ground, no twigs or branches; everything looked so, so good!
I had a blast at Ali and Pete’s. There were seven of us, all neighbours, and it was just the most fabulous fun. We all want to get together more regularly.
When I got home, Dave and Gray were coming out of Dave and Ursula’s house, so I apologized profusely for talking too much at their dinner party, and they were having none of it. They were very, very kind and they told me my stories are always very interesting. They even very sincerely invited me to Cost Rica, saying that I could fly down with Ursula and Dave. How sweet is that?!
I did some watering where it was most needed, washed and hung up the laundry on the line, fed the pets and crashed onto the chaise. I was done, but what a great My Day! I was on the couch. And then suddenly, I wasn’t. I keep making the same mistake. I’d left the back door open again and Ethel was on the loose.
I came in, closed the door and started to get my dinner together. I knew that at some point, Ethel would be howling outside the back door. But I kept my eye on her, and when I saw her coming towards the deck and the back door, I went out and spoke to her without any panic in my voice, and I called her. She came to me right away. I lifted her up and brought her back indoors, and then, for the next hour, she sat at the door and howled or stood on her back legs and scratched at the door with her front paws. It drove me mad, but it tired her out and soon she was asleep.

Although I loved the brunch, and my dinner with Dave and Ursula and kids, I’m very thankful for today because I have nothing to do (except water the plants). Tomorrow is the same. I am jubilant that I can recharge my batteries in solitude and spend the day in sparkling clean Pinecone Park. I need these days because Steve, the tornado, arrives on Friday.
