From the moment I rose yesterday morning, I wanted to return to bed. However, the brood had to be fed, and I needed to light the fire. It had been a cold, clear night and the house was very chilly. So, out to the shed, and when I came back inside, I put the wood on the hearth and reached for the poker. That’s when I noticed something most unwelcome. Sheba had shit in the hall during the night. Normally, she wakes me, but Friday night I was in a coma from having worked so hard on the wood during the day.
Once order was restored and everyone was fed, I went back to bed curled up around Ethel who loves to cuddle with me in the mornings. I didn’t get dressed until 9:00, and then Her Highness and I went for our morning walk. When I got home, I got to work on finishing the clean-up of the wood, but I was just too, too tired to continue. Instead, we went to Elder Cedar for a leisurely walk.
When I got back, good news! I heard from Grayson, and he came to work. I’m totally smitten with him now because he told me that one reason that I didn’t hear from him for a week was because his friend’s dog had to be euthanized, and the dog was Grayson’s best friend.
He’s such a kind, warm man, and he’s built like the proverbial brick shithouse. When he arrived, he split some wood to see how wet it was inside, and he can muster incredible force to split the wood. He’s a joy to have around and he’s coming back tomorrow. Woo hoo!
While he worked, Sheba and I went for a walk, our third of the day, and man oh man, was I walking slowly. But it was lovely to be outside. Whereas the morning was cool, especially with the wind, the afternoon was a balmy 13°, and come next week, we’ll be having temperatures in the low twenties!
One of the trees Grayson felled was dead, so it is dry, and I can use it this coming Winter, so I am generously set for wood for the next two years. I won’t have to buy wood again until 2007, assuming I’m still alive and living here.
Today is another brilliant day, and Grayson is coming back. Her Highness and I will get three walks today and I’ll futz about in the yard while Grayson does all the real work. It’s going to be a stunning week of lovely warm—sometimes very warm— afternoons. Hurrah!
