Diary of a Madman #3: Happiness Found

I have felt great all day; I have felt extraordinary happiness today.

Cathy came to join me for a walk on a stunning day — it's 20° —and we walked the seawall around False Creek. We meandered, stopping often to get a snack or peer into stores. We lasted four hours. It was a local yacht club's Sail Past day and the day of the Vancouver Marathon, so everyone was outside and there was lots to see.

With Cathy, I don't stutter at all and she's been great during my crisis, so I pulled her into an artist's boutique where Izabela sells her spectacular hand painted and folded silks. Her work is very "Fortuny," and when I said so, we bonded.

I had toI bought Cathy a gorgeous felted scarf that looked fabulous on her and a felted pin to go with it. It suites her perfectly. Izabela chose it, and I chose the pin to go with it. Giving a present when it is not your recipient's birthday or a holiday is remarkably rewarding for both parties—the best things in life are even better when unexpected. Like the best kiss.

And we wound up here for my ice creams. And then she said goodbye and I got into my car to buy a gift certificate for my physiotherapist (who's been so incredibly fabulous through my crisis), and only when I spoke to the lovely staff was I forced to remember I stutter. But it was 6:00 pm. A whole day without stuttering! Whoa!

Izabela's felted balls will become gorgeous
pins. All the dyes are natural.

We ran into our friend, Sue, a bureaucrat of
renown who surprised us with her brilliant
bead works at her booth in the Granville Island
Market. The photo does not do her work justice.

Izabela: I am such a fan.
