Digital Collages

My Room (click to enlarge)

I got the idea of digital collage from a student named Emily. Her work inspired me and so this is the first one I did. Like most of my creative work, it is autobiographical.

There are zillions of components to each image. The radio and all its parts are constructed.

I started with "My Room because I spent much of time my time at home alone in my room—my parents being of the "children should be neither seen nor heard" school of child husbandry. On the downside, I was often pining for escape; on the upside, my imagination thrived. Hence the interior of my room feeling dark whereas outside is warm, bright and inviting.

The stork as the source of babies story was huge when I was small; I wondered if adopted babies were stork-delivered like "normal" babies.

I had come from a Catholic orphanage and I believed passionately as I grew, in everything the church taught me. I thought if I strayed from God's rules, I would have to go back to the orphanage.

As a kid I thought daffodils were yellow because they stored sunshine.

We had a huge radio in our living room like the one in the photo. It, too, fired my imagination. When it delivered music, I felt rapture. The radio was a portal to places over the rainbow and to Mockingbird Hill.

By the time I left my room, I was a teenager. I felt I'd been raised "in the dark" about life, my past and my parents. I felt so confused and alone as my sexuality emerged in a way I neither expected nor understood. I had no idea what "gay" was.

I have a little costume in my hand made of Wallace tartan. Wallace tartan was the official symbol of the high school I began at age 11. It was the beginning of my escape.

During my puberty my adopted mother had strokes that worsened her depression. She lost her personality and mobility. She never got out of bed until, ultimately, she was institutionalized. My adopted father turned his back on me and so I thought a lot about my real mother. Who was she? Was she rich, poor, educated, alive? Why did she give me up.

At age 45, I found her and she told me her story. She left me behind to pursue a career on the stage. She did a great job of it. She said she never forgot me and wondered about my life, so I created this collage of a woman, costumed and on a stage looking out at the world.

The bluebird is happiness. The birds on her shoulder reference the birds in Walt Disney's Cinderella, another orphan with a false mother who loved nature and animals.

She has red Gerbera daisies because florists use them to represent innocence and purity. The Maple leaves are for Canada. The plumb leaves (top) are symbols of strength.

The movie rights to our story have been sold. I await news about its financing. Fingers are crossed. I wrote the screenplay, a much greater homage to my mother than my collage.

As I contemplate the title of my latest script, I enjoy creating images to go with possibilities. One possible title is Falling. If I use it, this will be its image.

My Food Porn

Food Porn is the name of my new photo blog on Tumblr. This is my first venture into that category of web-based services in the category of "social media." You can go to it by clicking here. All it is is a collection of images; it is my food scrapbook.

It was an interesting experience to scroll through all my collected digital images of the past few years to gather together the photos of the food I have made and photographed. I have not posted it all because how many apple tarts can you look at and some photographs were just too lame.

My friend Leslie gave me Ruby Tandoh's cookbook. She was my favourite contestant on the second season of The Great British Baking Show. It, plus all I learn in the courses I am going to take in the new year, is going to expand my repertoire.

Birth Day + 68

The best I could ever feel was: "I don't look too bad."

That was me, speaking to myself on the odd day throughout my life. Most days I lived life feeling only that I could "pass." Passing was a concept I learned from reading about people who appeared white but were black. I felt I could pass as "not ugly" on good days.

But this morning, it being my birthday, I received some photos from my past from my ex, whom I love to bits, and I was shocked because I thought I looked better than I felt, seeing my younger self with these old eyes. These must date from the early 1980s.

Today I am 68 and I am used to my old face.

Taken this morning in the garden out front of the
pharmacy behind my building. Yesterday was 14°.
The pit beside our building. A source of tremendous
noise since the beginning of June.
I met a man on the bus. He was charming.
This is his address book. He is a Milliner.
Dinner last night. Octopus at Forage Restaurant.
Dessert, below, was verbena ricotta cheese and blueberries.

My breakfast with Dwight this morning.

Food / Courses / Birthday

Beth took this photo of me using Xmas
ornaments for earrings.

Beth took me to Bishop’s for a birthday dinner Wednesday night. They gave us a window seat, which was very nice. And we both had the same meal: Scallops with a medley of beans and octopus. It was light and delicious.

The only down side to the evening was coming home and getting an email from Beth saying she had lost her brand new necklace that she got just yesterday from Circle Craft on Granville Island.

Costin, the guy who comes here every two weeks to work on my fish tank never fails to charm me. He is a warm happy guy whose visits always make me happy. He is one of those wonderful young people who engage with personality, regardless of age.

He loves to cook and so when he came yesterday, without having thought of it ahead of time, I found myself asking him if he’d be interested in taking some cooking courses at The Dirty Apron Cooking School that is run by one of my preferred restaurants—and he said yes.

This morning, I have awakened to an enthusiastic email from him so I am very happy to have found, not just someone, but a fellow foodie with whom to take some classes. Being Mr. Shy, I was discouraged from going alone and being partnered with a stranger.

Last this afternoon, I will go to see the movie Brooklyn with dear friends John & Bunny. I proposed that we go because I have “a thing” for Irish writers—and Colm Toibin in particular—and I have read the book. But surprise: J & B are going to take me out for dinner for my birthday.

And tomorrow night—the night of my actual birth date—I am going to Miku restaurant with David and Bryan. I was terribly impressed with this restaurant the last time I went. I think it should be far more celebrated.

I have an uncomfortable sense that the absence of Miku’s name from “best restaurant” lists has me suspect it is due to an absence of flamboyance or media savvy on the part of the owners/chef and/or the fact that it is Japanese cuisine because it is a spectacular place to eat—fabulous flavours, brave choices and exquisite presentation.

Counting Down to B-Day

My beloved Leon came and sat under my
desk lamp in the dark of 5:00 am this cool
morning, so I snapped this shot of him.

It's my birthday on Friday, so with Beth here we will go to Bishop's tonight. I hope to pay my own way. I am thoroughly happy to pay my own way at my birthday dinners so that I can go to places of elegance and exquisite food.

Tomorrow I am going to a movie matinee of Brooklyn. ( love Toibin and have read the book, plus I have heard good things about it. I am going with good friends John & Bunny. Every great birthday celebration when I was a kid included a movie and popcorn with your best friends.

Friday night, my actual birthday, David and Bryan and I will be going to Miku a fabulous Japanese restaurant with astounding flavours and presentations.

And Costin, my fish consultant and a lovely man, is interested in taking some cooking classes at The Dirty Apron cooking school with me. I have been keen to take classes but not to share a cooking station with someone I don't know, so with Costin for company I will love taking courses from this school that is attached to a restaurant I really like—Chambar.

I Could Not Resist

Michel Zee: A Man to Love

He's gay, he's a cook and he's an artist.

Michael Zee, a talented photographer and cook, has spent over two years crafting matching morning meals for himself and his boyfriend, Mark van Beek. Zee uses ideas and ingredients from around the world without duplication and then posts the results to a large Instagram following. This wonderful project, called “Symmetry Breakfast“, has taken on a life of its own, much to Zee’s surprise. In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, Zee spoke about what he does to keep the project going.

People wonder if I’m crazy or obsessive, but it is a declaration of love, really. I’m dedicated – both to breakfast and to Mark. …I get up really, really early. …If something takes more than 30 minutes to make, such as a sourdough, I do it the night before. I post at 7.30am and we leave the house at 8am. Usually, within the first hour, I’ll have 1,000 likes and by the next day it will go up to about 3,000.
